Jensen Outdoor sustainability

Jensen Outdoor was among the first outdoor furniture manufacturers to receive Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) Certification. This certification confirms that the forest is being managed to preserve biological diversity, benefit local people and workers, and ensure economic viability. Through a land-lease partnership with the Bolivian government, Jensen Outdoor manages over 2 million acres of dry-tropical forests in Eastern Bolivia.

Jensen Outdoor’s Ipe (pronounced “EE-pay”) wood furniture is not only incredibly durable, but Ipe hardwood trees grow slowly, taking nearly a century to reach the dimensions necessary to produce the finest, most durable, timbers on the market today. Ipe wood is incredibly dense, making it naturally resistant to rot, decay, insects, and harsh weather conditions. Unlike other decking materials that require chemical treatments to enhance their lifespan, Ipe wood remains durable on its own.

Jensen Outdoor’s small-footprint harvesting techniques only select the century-old mature Ipe trees, leaving the younger and more fertile trees to replenish the forest before our next harvest. Jensen Outdoor has also made an FSC®-Certified plan to rotate which areas of the forest are harvested every season. This ensures that the same plot of forest is not touched again before thirty years have passed, allowing new batches of mature Ipe trees to grow, contributing to forest diversity.

Jensen Outdoor furniture materials

In addition to Ipe wood, Jensen Outdoor furniture is made from durable materials such as Woven Viro® Fiber, powder-coated aluminum, high-pressure laminate, and Sunbrella cushion fabrics.

Made of high-density polyethylene, woven Viro® Fiber offers superior resilience, colorfastness, and style. These fibers are specifically engineered for outdoor use, and color dyes penetrate all the way through the fiber rather than just on the surface, resulting in long-lasting color that won’t fade. In fact, Viro® Fiber stands up to temperatures ranging from -90 to +175 degrees Fahrenheit and has been laboratory-tested to withstand continuous UV exposure for 3 years. Viro® Fiber is also 100% recyclable.

Jensen Outdoor’s commercial-grade powder-coated aluminum is resistant to corrosion, fading, and scratches. Unlike traditional paint and other finishing processes, powder coating also avoids the production of harmful fumes and airborne pollutants.

High-pressure laminate is typically comprised of Kraft paper enriched with resin, resulting in a modern material with natural antimicrobial properties and exceptional longevity. This material is also extremely durable and resistant to scratches, stains, and fading. It’s also virtually waterproof, making it resistant to swelling or cracking.

Jensen Outdoor’s award-winning designs and craftsmanship

With design teams in the United States and Europe, Jensen Outdoor works with award-winning designers who specialize in outdoor and wood furniture to create beautiful furniture inspired by nature and engineered to last. A team of skilled craftsmen—sustainably located near the source of Jensen Outdoor’s materials in Bolivia—bring these designs to life with rigorous rounds of testing and revision to ensure superior structural stability and design aesthetics.

Jensen Outdoor’s wood furniture is made from the heart of harvested trees. This heartwood portion of the tree offers the most stability, strength, and integrity, essential qualities in outdoor furniture that lasts throughout cold, wet, and dry periods.

Jensen Outdoor’s timber is carefully kiln dried for four to eight weeks to reduce the moisture content to 12%. This further stabilizes wood furniture’s joinery when exposed to higher levels of humidity. Each piece of furniture has been laboratory tested for commercial applications.
